To Strengthen Students’ Competencies, the Library Science Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Holds a Public Lecture on Manuscript Digitization

This public lecture was held on Thursday, May 4, 2023 which took place in the theatrical room of the UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta Library. Attended by all students of the Library Science Study Program, Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, class of 2020, Prof. Dr. Nurdin, S.Ag., S.S., M.A. As the Head of the Library Science Study Program gave his remarks, he said that this guest lecturer lecture was held as an event to strengthen competence, would be carried out for each course to be more varied and was a program that would always be held every year. This activity went smoothly with a implementation time of 12.30 to 17.00 WIB.

It was divided into two sessions, namely the first public lecture discussing Manuscript Digitization, guided by Muhammad Bagus Febriyanto, M.Hum. as a lecturer of the Library Science Study Programof UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta as the moderator, the resource person by M. Solihin Arianto, S.Ag., S.S., M.LIS. AS A LECTURER OF THE Library Science Study Programof UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and Ilham Nurwansyah, M.Pdwho came from the Center for Community Islamic Studies (PPIM) UINSyarif Hidayatullah Jakarta as well as a member of Dreamsea (Digital Repository In Southeast Asia). The second session of the lecture discussed scripture, guided by Andriyana Fatmawati, M.Pd. as a lecturer in the Library Science Study Program,UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta as a moderator and resource person by Hannan Asrowi Efflina Lailufa as an activist of the Jangkah Nusantara Community.

On this occasion, M. Solihin Arianto, S.Ag., S.S., M.LIS conveyed related to risks, mitigation, and the reasons for the importance of the process of preservation and digitization of manuscripts. Furthermore, the topic was explained in detail by Ilham Nurwansyah, M.Pd as the second resource person who described how the process of preserving and digitizing manuscripts was carried out by Dreamsea (Digital Repository In Southeast Asia).

Dreamsea is a program that seeks to digitize manuscripts in the Southeast Asian region. The program was initiated by the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Indonesia in collaboration with the Centre for the Study of Manuscripts Culture (CSMC) of the University of Hamburg, Germany. The program is supported by Arcadia, a UK-based charity fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin.

Since the program first started in 2017, Dreamsea has carried out physical preservation, digitization of media transfer and uploading files of ancient manuscripts in Southeast Asia to a cloud database of digital repositories presented in collaboration with Museum Hill and the Manuscript Library. At the end of the session, the practice of digitizing manuscripts was carried out by Ilham Nurwansyah, M.Pd and the team so that the students could see firsthand the digitization process of manuscripts.

After the first session ended, the students were also very enthusiastic about participating in the second session, namely the presentation of material related to Cryptrium by Hannan Asrowi Efflina Lailufa as an activist of the Jangkah Nusantara Community. The activity in this second session was also the last session which marked the end of the activity.
