The Library Science Program Holds a Workshop on Scientific Writing to Enhance Students’ Knowledge in the Field of Writing
On Friday, September 8, 2023, the Library Science Program at Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University in Yogyakarta held a Workshop on Writing Academic Papers for Library Science students in the class of 2021. The workshop was held in the Treatikal Room of the Integrated Lecture Building to equip Library Science students particularly those in the class of 2021 with the skills to write more effectively and to better prepare them for their final project, the thesis. The speakers at this writing workshop were Ms. Atin Istiarni, M.IP, a librarian at the Muhammadiyah University of Magelang Library, and Mr. Budhi Santoso, M.A., editor of the journal *TADWIN: Journal of Library and Information Science* at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang.
The event opened with opening remarks from the Secretary of the Library Science Program, Mr. Ahmad-Anwar, followed by presentations from the two speakers, moderated by Mr. Faisal Syarifudin, S.Ag., S.S., M.Si. This was followed by a question-and-answer session and concluded with closing remarks.
Mr. Ahmad-Anwar, Secretary of the Library Science Program, stated that the final semester is the most crucial period, given that the courses in the final semester are closely related to the academic thesis. Therefore, the Library Science Program is offering this writing workshop covering everything from topic selection to the final output, the thesis so that students can complete their coursework smoothly and graduate on time with the highest honors.
In the first session, Ms. Atin Istiarni, M.I.P., presented her material on “Experiences in Researching and Writing Scientific Papers.” She explained that writing a scientific paper is like putting together a puzzle it must be assembled systematically so that the information forms a coherent whole.According to him, the steps involved in writing a scientific paper include: determining the idea and topic to be addressed in the paper, conducting research, beginning to write the paper, and finally, publishing the scientific paper. In addition, there are several things to keep in mind when writing a scientific paper, such as the author’s perspective, which must be consistent; the research concept, which must demonstrate the researcher’s novelty or innovation compared to previous studies; and the predictions, which must be accurate. Therefore, one effective method is the “zoom out” approach, and it is helpful to have a writing partner.Research topics for writing can be derived from seminars, webinars, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), science mapping, and many other sources.
In the second session, Mr. Budhi Santoso, M.A delivered a presentation on "How to Publish a Thesis into a Journal Article". There are several things that must be considered in publishing a thesis into a journal article, such as: condensing it into approximately 8-15 pages, minimizing plagiarism by using correct citation sources, adjusting the journal template to be published because each journal has different templates and styles of content. The first step in writing a journal article includes: making an interesting, concise and clear title, correspondence that is in accordance with the journal management system, making a concise abstract (usually in a journal only 150-250 words), the topic being researched has novelty (not only the difference in place, location, and time but from the perspective of the problem raised), there are results and discussions of the research that are clearly raised, There are research methods used by the author in researching the problems raised, and the selection of citations that are outlined in the bibliography must be in accordance with existing sources. He also said that in writing, if his work is successfully published, he will get a publication incentive in the form of money that is nominally not quite decent for students.
The event continued with a question and answer session and then ended with a closing. In the question and answer session, several questions emerged from the participants who were very enthusiastic about the material that had been presented by the speakers. Through this workshop, it is hoped that it can provide views on the authorship of scientific papers to Library Science students, especially the class of 2021, and be able to apply their knowledge well.
