Library Science Program Enhances Students’ Competencies Through an Expert Lecture on Information Literacy
Yogyakarta, December 12, 2024 – The Library Science Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga held an engaging expert lecture on the topic of “Information Literacy.” The event took place at the Integrated Lecture Building (GKT) and began at 8:00 a.m. WIB, attended by the entire academic community of the Library Science Program.
The lecture featured Dr. Mukhlis, S.IP., M.IP, a lecturer at Brawijaya University, and Dr. Anis Masruri, S.Ag., S.S., M.Si, a lecturer at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, as panelists. Dr. Siti Rohaya, S.Ag., M.T., served as the moderator guiding the discussion.
In her presentation, Dr. Anis Masruri emphasized the importance of being critical when receiving information. In today’s digital age, easy access to information can actually be a double-edged sword. Although we can obtain information quickly, many of us may actually be less thorough in analyzing what we receive.
Therefore, she urged everyone to use information wisely, especially librarians, who play a crucial role in disseminating information to the public.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mukhlis discussed an interesting topic on digital literacy. He explained how important it is for students and librarians to truly understand this concept. According to him, digital literacy is a person’s ability to understand and utilize information available in various digital formats.
He also reminded the audience to be wise and not to overuse digital media such as smartphones. He also emphasized the role of librarians as educators—that is, as people who educate the public in the context of digital literacy.
The attendees recognized just how important and relevant the information shared during the event was. This expert lecture, organized by the Library Science Program, is expected to broaden students’ knowledge and enhance their competencies regarding information literacy—particularly in the digital age—so that they can contribute to the development of literacy in society.
