Library Science Study Program Holds Guest Lecture: Equipping Digital Native Generations with Information Literacy
Yogyakarta, 12 June 2025 – The Library Science Study Program successfully held a guest lecture titled “Information Literacy for Digital Native Generations” at the Integrated Lecture Building (GKT) on Wednesday (12/6) at 08.30 a.m. The event, attended by members of the academic community, featured two key experts: Dr. Sri Rohyanti Zulaikha, S.Ag., S.S., M.Si. (lecturer at UIN Sunan Kalijaga) and Novy Diana Fauzie, S.S., M.A. (Head of the Library of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta/UMY), with Khairunnisa Etika Sari, M.IP., serving as moderator.
This activity aimed to equip students—who are part of a generation born and raised in the digital era—with the skills to manage information intelligently, critically, and responsibly. Dr. Sri Rohyanti emphasized that although digital natives are technically proficient, information literacy remains a crucial responsibility. “Information literacy is not merely about understanding, but about the ability to use information wisely,” she stressed.
She added that a safe and ethical digital environment must be created so that this generation can survive and thrive. She also underscored the importance of instilling information ethics from an early age, particularly in relation to how individuals access, process, and share information in the digital space.
Novy Diana Fauzie highlighted the potential of digital natives to access information instantly, while reminding that such potential must be balanced with deep literacy competencies. According to Novy, information literacy encompasses the ability to use information wisely, critically, and ethically in order to create a digital environment that is informative and responsible.
This guest lecture served as a reminder that amid the ease of access to information, digital generations actually need robust literacy foundations. The Library Science Study Program has thereby reaffirmed its commitment to preparing students to become intelligent and ethical information managers in the digital age.
